We had a wonderful trip to Warkworth Castle to finish off our history topic this term. We explored the bailey and the keep, talked about the history and geographical location of the castle, and had a picnic on the grass in the glorious sunshine. What a wonderful way to end the term!
We had a lot of fun this morning doing lots of Easter activities. We made paper bunnies and chocolate crispy cakes. Then we had a great Easter egg hunt outside.
We had a lovely, thoughtful afternoon visiting different prayer spaces whilst learning about the Easter story.

In Design and Technology, we really enjoyed making our hand puppets. We learned how to use a template and attach it with pins, we drew and cut around it, then attached the two pieces of felt with glue. Once the glue had dried, we decorated our puppets with wool, pipe cleaners, fabric crayons and bits of felt.

For World Book Day we all dressed up as our favourite book characters. We had a special assembly and paraded in our costumes around the hall. We played some games: “Guess the Book Character” and “Who Wants to be a World Book Day Millionaire?” then we used origami to make a bookmark.
In DT we were exploring different ways to join fabric, including glueing, pinning and stapling.
In Science we are looking at changes across the seasons, and in RE our topic is New Life so we walked down to the forest area to look for signs of spring. We saw blossom, snowdrops and primroses. We also saw lots of buds and new leaves on the trees as well as a few birds’ nests.
We continued our “art using paper” theme with some animal origami.

For homework, the Year 1s were asked to find out about the toys that their parents and grandparents played with. It was so interesting to look at photos and hear about how their toys were similar and different to toys today. Some children brought in some old toys so we were able to look at them first-hand.
In our art lesson today, we folded and rolled paper to create 3D paper sculptures. We practised making all the different shapes first (tables, bridges, loops, zig-zags, curls) then used paper of different colour and different lengths to create our own work of art.
Achievers of the Week! 17/01/2025
To kick off our new History topic “Toys”, we all brought in a favourite toy from home to show-and-tell. We talked about why it was our favourite toy, what type of toy it was and what it was made from. Then we had a bit of time to play with our toys!

In our Art lesson today we made 3D sculptures from paper and card. First we investigated the best way to make a cylinder out of paper then we thought about ways in which to attach our cylinders to a piece of card. We made cylinders of different heights and widths, and with different colours, then arranged them into sculptures.
Santa came to visit our school on the last day of term!
We had a great Christmas party then we sat down to a party food feast!

All dressed up ready to perform our Christmas Nativity.

On Friday afternoon we were invited to visit Crawcrook Library. We had a lovely time looking at the books. Kyle read us a super Christmas story and organised a lovely craft activity where we could make our own miniature Christmas jumpers.
In DT we have designed and constructed a moving picture book based on the story of Humpty Dumpty. Once we had finished putting it together, we evaluated it against our original plans and checked to see that all the moving parts worked properly.

In English we have been reading different versions of the story of The Three Little Pigs and telling the story ourselves with the help of stick puppets.
In DT we have been exploring how sliders work. We made a car move from side to side and a rabbit move up and down.
Achievers of the Week! 22/11/2024
We had a lovely visit to Holy Cross Church on Friday. Reverend Alison talked to us about the beautiful stained glass windows in the church and explained how they were made. We spent some time looking carefully at them. Then we used coloured pens to create our own!

This week, Year 1 children created a piece of abstract art inspired by the works of Kandinsky, Bernal and Bolowtowsky. They did this by drawing around and overlapping a variety of 2D shapes. They used mixed media (pastels, chalks, pencils, watercolours and felt tip pens to colour in the shapes between the lines. Year 2 also created an abstract work of art in a similar way but they used different materials to add texture to theirs.
We are getting really good at understanding what exactly a sentence is. We sorted these strips into two piles, deciding whether they were full sentences or not. It was extra tricky because the punctuation had been left out!
In Maths we have started looking at parts and wholes. We did some super practical work in pairs today.
Achievers of the Week! 11/10/2024
Today’s Art lesson was called “Making Waves”. We explored expressive lines using music to create large collaborative pieces inspired by water and the artwork of Zaria Forman.
In Science we have been learning about different animal groups and why particular animals fit into each group. We looked at British animals first then looked at animals from around the world and grouped them into mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, insects and amphibians.

In art this week, Year 1 looked at the work of Bridget Riley and how she used different types of lines to create some of her pieces. We explored different lines of our own using chalk on black paper. Year 2 also used lines to create their artwork based on a map.

In science today we used our sense of sight to look carefully at the objects placed in front of us then work out which one had been removed, and we used our sense of touch to identify things hidden from sight in a bag.
Achievers of the Week! 27/09/2024
We have been exploring our senses in science. We used our hearing to try to work out who was playing the bells behind their back; we used our sense of smell to try to identify different spices; and we used our taste buds when sampling drinks that were sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

In science we investigated whether the width of our arms outstretched was equal to our height and found that it was very close, if not the same. We also investigated to see if the width of our hand spans was equal to the length of our feet. We found that this was mostly true.
Achievers of the Week! 13/09/2024
We had a lovely time choosing books to take home from our library.
In Science, our topic is the human body. Today we did some investigations. We wanted to see if the oldest child in the class is the tallest child in the class. We also wanted to find out if the youngest child has the smallest feet. Then we investigated whether the tallest child has the biggest feet.
Matching the number with the correct amount by counting very carefully.
